Book a Consultation"The essence of strategy is choosing what not to do." Michael E. Porter
When it comes to getting the tax side of a nomad life right, one rule beats all others: "Don't do stupid stuff." The single most important thing is that you avoid serious mistakes and expensive missteps. Above all, you need to know what you must not do under any circumstances.
Easier said than done. I regularly hear from digital nomads who insist on unrealistic ideas and constructs because they read about them somewhere.
I see it as my most important job to show you what does not work. And I speak plainly.
How I advise
Years of strategic work on the international tax situations of digital nomads have taught me this: it pays to start with the classic "via negativa". First define which scenario must be prevented at all costs and which situations you should stay away from.
Via negativa
Simply avoiding serious mistakes is often half the battle. In many situations, the discipline of error avoidance alone decides whether a setup works.
And nothing teaches error avoidance better than the concrete mistakes of others. The method: compare your plan with strategies that worked and strategies that failed, recognize the patterns, and draw the conclusions for your own risk analysis.
Experience from hundreds of clients works for you
Over the years I have spoken with countless digital nomads who made serious mistakes with their tax situation and then came to me for advice. Often I could help them turn the ship around. By no means always.
Whether a case ended well or it was already too late: every future client benefits from what I learned in the ones before. And it may be exactly what keeps you from repeating a similar mistake.
Focus on what matters
Another dimension of the Porter quote: less is usually more. Focus. Concentration on the essentials. Avoid complications.
If you think a highly complex web of companies is the mark of good advice, you are mistaken. Expensive advice, perhaps. Good advice shows itself in radical simplification. Reduce complexity. Avoid interdependencies. That is what this is actually about.
Naming things, even when it stings
Part of my approach is to dismantle myths and constructs that end in dangerous problems. Some nomads practically hide behind a structure and believe that because it looks complicated, it protects them. It does not.
Sometimes the finger has to go right into the wound, even when it hurts. I am not afraid to call things by their name.
What I can do for you
The consultation is a tax positioning session, an open-ended analysis of your plans abroad. It is ideal if you:
- Plan to live as a digital nomad or trader nomad, or already do
- Want to bring your tax burden down as far as your situation allows
- Want to form a company abroad, for example a US LLC
- Want to protect existing assets from outside reach
- Want a review of structures and arrangements you already run
What we can cover
The session follows your specific case. Typical topics include:
- Bringing down the tax burden of a nomad life
- VAT and sales tax questions for location-independent businesses
- Defining your tax residency
- Day counts that do not trigger tax residency
- Personal income tax across borders
- Company formation (US LLC or another entity type)
- Registering an official residency, for example in Ireland
- Automatic exchange of information (OECD CRS)
- Non-dom taxation (remittance basis)
- Place of effective management / management and control
10 real questions from real sessions
These are questions clients have actually brought into a consultation:
- I want to leave my home country now and end my tax residency there. What has to happen, and in what order?
- I am already a digital nomad and my bank now wants proof of my tax residency. What can I do?
- My clients sit in one country and I am everywhere. Where does my company actually pay tax?
- Where, apart from Malta, can I move my residency to be well positioned for tax?
- How do I get the highest possible level of confidentiality?
- How do I avoid creating a permanent establishment in the countries I stay in?
- What do I need to watch, tax-wise, when I eventually move back home?
- Which non-dom system suits me best?
- Can I run intellectual property through Malta at low tax, and under which conditions?
- Do the tax models of Amazon, Starbucks and Google work for someone like me?
How to prepare
The clearer you are about what you want, and the more you have already engaged with the subject, the more you get out of the session.
The best preparation is to think your plan through in concrete terms beforehand, so we can start exactly where you currently stand.
